Twentynine Palms is a great base for Mojave Desert explorations.  Headquarters for Joshua Tree National Park are based here, along with the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, the largest Marine Corps base in the world.  There's great lodging, fine dining at the 29 Palms Inn, the Old Schoolhouse Museum, and the 29 Palms Art Gallery.  From 29 Palms, you can explore Route 66, the Amboy Crater, the Mojave National Preserve, the Colorado River, and more.
